Nushrratt Bharuccha Says Being Replaced In Dream Girl 2 Was ‘Unfair’: ‘Even Male Actors…’

The second installment does not feature Nushrratt Bharuccha, who costarred with Ayushmann Khurrana in the 2019 movie Dream Girl.

In the 2023 movie Dream Girl 2, Ananya Panday took her position.  Director Raaj Shaandilyaa responded last month to Nushrratt's statement that the choice to not cast her in the sequel was "not cool" by stating that the movie was a franchise installment rather than a straight sequel.

Regardless of whether Dream Girl 2 was referred to be a franchise or a sequel, the actress responded to the director's comment by stating that she didn't think it was fair to be left out.  She clarified that she would have been just as offended and would have questioned Luv Ranjan's choice if he had not chosen her for Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2.

Nushrratt Bharuccha told Siddharth Kannan that although it seemed unfair at the time, she has already moved on.

Regarding her friendship with Raaj Shaandilyaa, she mentioned that they remain close.  She acknowledged that she was upset when Dream Girl 2 came out, but that is now the end of that chapter in her life.  "I worked with him on another movie.  I've had three additional offers from him.

We will continue to collaborate on some project.  That chapter is over for me.  However, if you ask me now, did it hurt or not?  It did, indeed.  Was it fair in my opinion?  It was unfair, in my opinion.  No one can possibly believe it is fair, in my opinion.  Franchise tha, sequel tha, jo bhi tha.  This is the context in which the film is set.

In addition, Nushrratt highlighted the gender bias, describing it as "unfair" that male performers are usually kept in sequels while female actors are frequently replaced.  Even her male co-stars believe it is unfair, she continued.

About the actors I have worked with, I would at least like to mention that even the male actors will find it unfair.

It's not as though the heroes are saying, "Sahi ho raha hai."  All of them are actors.  Our industries are similar.

However, the desire for that movie is different for some reason," she stated.  It ultimately comes down to the "makers'" decision and choice, she continued, and there's no need in contesting it.

Regarding Dream Girl 2's replacement of Nushrratt Bharuccha, what did Raaj Shaandilyaa say?

Raaj Shaandilyaa, the director of Dream Girl 2, responded last month to Nushrratt's replacement by Ananya.

In an interview with the Times of India, he clarified that Dream Girl 2 was intended to be a part of an expanding franchise rather than a direct sequel.  "I would have cast Nushrratt if it were a proper sequel," he remarked.

"However, we chose to introduce a new female lead because this was more of a franchise movie."  The original plot arc between Ayushmann and Nushrratt's characters had already come to a logical end, Raaj continued.
