Chris Evans reportedly returning to Marvel in 'Avengers: Doomsday.' But who is he playing?
He would do this all day.
Chris Evans is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming movie "Avengers: Doomsday," according to newspaper reports. The news was first reported by The Wrap and then confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Deadline.
USA TODAY has reached out to those working for Disney and Marvel for comment.
But the reports notably did not specify whether Evans will be reprising his character of Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America.
That may seem like a given, but it was previously announced that the film will also star Robert Downey Jr. as the villain Doctor Doom, not as Iron Man. This go forth open the possibility that Evans, too, could be taking on a different role.
Evans returned to Marvel earlier this month with a surprise cameo in "Deadpool & Wolverine," but not as Captain America.
In a comedic scene, Evans dramatically bring out himself, leading audiences to believe Steve Rogers was back. But it was then revealed that he was actually the Human Torch from "Fantastic Four," who Evans played before being cast as Captain America.
The Human Torch was violently crushed minutes later, but the multiverse gives Marvel the option to bring back alternate versions of dead characters at any time.
Evans starred as Captain America in the Marvel universe from 2011 through 2019. Like Downey, he departed the series in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame," which concluded with Steve going back in time to spend the rest of his life together with Peggy Carter.
At the conclusion of the film, Steve returned to the present as an old man and passed the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). Mackie went on to star in the Disney+ series "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and he will headline the 2025 movie "Captain America: Brave New World."
It has never been officially confirmed that Steve Rogers died of old age after "Avengers: Endgame," sparking theories that he could make one more appearance in a mentor role. "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" established the character's whereabouts are unspecified and that there are conspiracy theories he is living on the moon.

Since 2019, Evans has frequently said in interviews that he would be reluctant to return as Steve Rogers, as he did not want to undermine the emotion of his send-off in "Endgame." He has always kept the door open, though, saying on "The View" last year, "I would never say never, but I'm very protective of it. It's a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right."
If Evans is playing Captain America, Marvel could bring him back by having a interpretation of the character from another timeline appear, maybe even an evil one who is on Doctor Doom's side.
Alternatively, he could be taking on a entirely new, perhaps villainous role. Some fans have speculated Evans will portray the Beyonder, a cosmic entity from the comics who plays a role in the "Secret Wars" storyline.
