Authorities in New Mexico have disclosed that actor Gene Hackman might have died almost 10 days before the discovery of his body.

On Wednesday, neighborhood security officials discovered the bodies of the actor, his wife (pianist Betsy Arakawa), and a dog at their home in New Mexico. The authorities continue to probe the cause, which is still deemed "suspicious" at this stage.

During a press conference on Friday, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that Hackman's pacemaker showed "his last event was recorded on February 17, 2025."  Mendoza noted that it was "a very good assumption" to deduce that Hackman had his "last day of life" more than a week before being discovered.

Tests also determined that carbon monoxide poisoning was not the couple's cause of death, he said.

According to a Thursday statement from the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, deputies discovered the deceased bodies of the 95-year-old actor and Arakawa on Wednesday at approximately 1:45 p.m.  Mendoza expressed to the "Today" show on Friday that he is "pretty confident that there's no foul play" involved. However, police are "not ruling that out."

During the press conference, Mendoza stated that Hackman and Arakawa had tested negative for carbon monoxide. The sheriff said the couple was taken to the medical investigator's office early Thursday.

Hackman lived an intensely private life in New Mexico after leaving California. At the beginning of the conference, Jennifer LaBar-Tapia from the Santa Fe Film Office expressed her sorrow over his passing.

LaBar-Tapia said, "Gene was not just a legendary actor whose talent influenced generations of storytelling; he and Betsy were also long-time members of our community. The couple were "deeply woven" into Santa Fe, New Mexico, where Hackman lived a reclusive life after his lavish Hollywood career.

After departing California, the Hollywood icon lived a quiet life in his cherished New Mexico. Authorities are now revealing new details about what was discovered inside the Hackman home.

On January 19, 2003, Gene Hackman and his spouse, Betsy Arakawa, attended the 60th Annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The search warrant executed on Thursday revealed an inventory that included two green cell phones, thyroid medication, Diltiazem (a drug for high blood pressure and chest pain), Tylenol, MyQuest records, and a monthly planner for 2025.

Mendoza stated on Friday that his office would "look and try to gain access to the cellphones."  To reconstruct a timeline, we will analyze cell phone data, including calls, texts, events, and photos.
