Box Office: ‘Wicked’ Sings to Nearly $16M on Monday, a November Record
With $5.5 million, Gladiator II had a successful Monday as well.
With ticket sales of $15.8 million on Monday, which set a November record for the first day of the week without accounting for inflation, Wicked continued to create box office history.
That is far more than the previous record-holder, Frozen II, from 2019, which opened the weekend before Turkey Day and skated to $12.7 million on its debut Monday. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), which earned $12.3 million, and Skyfall (2012), which earned $11.3 million (both were Thanksgiving films), are also listed among the best November Mondays.

After debuting to a record-breaking $112.5 million, the Jon M. Chu-directed Wicked ended Monday with a domestic cume of $128.3 million. This was the highest-ever opening for a movie based on a Broadway musical and one of the largest starts ever for a big-screen musical. The film has already made close to $200 million worldwide.
After debuting to a solid $55 million domestically, Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, brought in $5.5 million on Monday, for an early global total of almost $226 million.

The fact that many schools are already on holiday break helps to explain why Monday and the entire Thanksgiving week are profitable moviegoing days.
This year's five-day holiday weekend (Wednesday through Sunday) is predicted to see record ticket sales thanks to theatres' three tentpoles, which together offer something for both men and women of all ages: Universal's Wicked, Paramount's Gladiator II, and Walt Disney Animation's Moana 2, which opens everywhere on Wednesday after Tuesday previews.

In order to capitalise on the entire week and to give some separation from the Moana 2, which has given rise to the term "Moanapocalpyse," Wicked and Gladiator II chose to launch last weekend. For comparison, the animated follow-up is on course to break the Thanksgiving box office record, earning between $125 million and $135 million over the course of five days.
The benefit of Moana 2, a musical as well, is that it's the only PG-rated family movie on the Thanksgiving schedule. Furthermore, the original Moana, which was released in 2016 to respectable but unimpressive box office receipts, has subsequently become a kid-friendly cultural phenomenon; last year, it was the most streamed film on all platforms.
